The Four of Them

This series is a high school rom-com about how messy dating can be when none of you know what you're doing and everyone is still trying to figure out what they want from the people around them. The series begins with Johnny crushing on his sister's girlfriend Mariel and trying to figure out what he can do to get over her and escalates from there.

Night Owls and Summer Skies

Night Owls and Summer Skies is probably the most emotionally intense of any of the webtoons on this list. The story follows recently out-of-the-closet lesbian Emma Lane as her mother ships her off to summer camp, initially, she tries her best to get kicked out but when she draws the attention of beautiful camp counselor Vivian Black she begins to think things might be turning around. There are a lot more twists and turns to this one than that summary would imply but you should read the series and feel that hurt yourself.

Webtoon is a powerful platform for comic artists to get out and create their own series, it allows them to self-publish without having to go through one of the major companies and as such allows creatives a level of freedom they wouldn’t necessarily have elsewhere. This has led to some artists pushing out some of the best romances in the comics industry, today I’m going to talk about a few of my personal favorites.

Honey Lemon

Just recently started back up on Originals after its first run on Canvas garnered enough attention for an upgrade Honey Lemon tells the story of struggling writer Kyoungmi as she attempt to follow up on her first big hit while struggling to balance her work and personal life. It’s the story of two cogs fitting into place when neither of them knew that they were missing something. Along with that, it has a wonderful cast of side characters who could each carry a series in their own right.

Always Human

And finally, one I’ve talked about on here before, Always Human is a story set in a near future earth in which everyone uses a technology called Mods for all kinds of genetic manipulation from fashion to health. This story follows two young women as get to know each other and learn what it means to be with someone else. One of our protagonists is a young college student who suffers from a condition that makes using mods difficult, this story explores disability and what that means in a society that has eliminated so much suffering.
