Pluto is getting an anime; Why you should be hyped!
Pluto by Naoki Urusawa has just released its first trailer, in which it was confirmed by Netflix that the series will be available later this year. For the uninitiated Naoki Urursawa is best known for his work on the series Monster, a physiological thriller widely considered to be one of the best in the genre. Pluto is his mature take on Astro Boy. Alongside the original Astro Boy author’s son, he worked to preserve the original author Osama Tezuka’s vision. Urusawa set out to adapt “The Greatest Robot on Earth” arc from the Astro Boy manga into a modern story with his own twists.
With all that out of the way, Pluto would be a masterpiece on his own merits not just because of the brilliance of its inception and concept. Pluto tells the story of Europol robot detective Gesicht as he tracks a serial killer who is killing humans and robots alike in what seems like an attempt to attack robot civil rights. This would be troubling enough, but when evidence points to this killing being done at robot hands, the first time a robot had killed a person in eight years, things truly start to spiral out of hand. Pluto is a masterfully constructed murder mystery that explores what it means to be a person and emotionally react to a shifting world. Like all of Urusawa’s work, it’s smart and interesting in all the best ways.
With an anime by Netflix on the horizon, it’ll certainly be one to watch in the coming year. Make sure not to miss a single episode or you’ll regret it!
